What is an Edgebander ?
An Edgebander is a machine used for the application and trimming of a decorative edge to seal exposed chipboard or MDF during the production of Kitchens, Bedrooms, Bathroom, Office Furniture and Shopfitting. An Edge Bander can also be used to apply and trim solid timber lippings for veneered furniture and Fire Doors.
Edgebanders are usually a though feed machine and are suitable for small and medium furniture production through to high volume edgebanding. The speed of processing determines the output while the quality of the trimming and finish should not be compromised regardless of speed as the edgebander should have the appropriate processing units for the edgebanding application. Ideally a single sided edgebander should have a Panel Return system connected to improve the efficiency of the machine and reduce the number of operators to one. For high volume production Double sided edgebanders or Combination Sizing and Edgebanding machines can form fully automated production lines with machine panel feeding and stacking.
There are four methods of adhering the decorative tape or lipping to the panel with an Edgebander.
The most common is Hot Melt EVA glue. This is perfect for most furniture production applications. It is important that the EVA glue is compatible with the edgebander track speed to prevent stringing.
PUR (Polyurethane) Glue is a higher quality glue that can be used on an edgebanding machine with excellent temperature tolerances and perfect for areas that may be regularly damp such as bathrooms, laboratories and health care furniture as it seals the edges well. It also benefits from a much thinner glue line than EVA glue so is good for applications such as high gloss door edging where the EVA glue line would be unacceptable. As PUR undergoes a chemical change in application it cannot be re-melted like EVA and so is suitable for solid lipping applications such as fire doors. However more care need to be taken with processing and maintenance with PUR Glues than with EVA.
Hot Air Reactivation. Edgebanders with modern hot air reactivation gluing systems such a Air Tec and Air Force were developed along side special edging tapes so that when matched with the correct panel the edging has a Zero glue line. Often used on high gloss doors for example. This process is not really suitable for standard carcase parts due to the cost of the edging so is mainly used for frontals. An edgebander with a hot air system would normally have EVA or PUR gluing capability too.
Laser Gluing. Similar applications to the Hot Air System this is used in higher production environments.
Leading manufacturers of Edgebanders include Homag Group with the Edgeteq series, Prior to 2017 Brandt was the Homag Group company producing the small to medium size edgebanders while Homag produced the larger edgebanders and Double sided Edgebanding machines. Biesse Group small to medium models are the Akron series while the industrial Stream series machines were produced for higher production and Double Sided edging lines. SCM Group have the Olimpic range for the small to medium edgebanders and Stefani ranges for the Higher production and Double Sided edgebanding applications. While IMA do have modest size edgebanders they are better known for larger machines and Combination edgebanding lines.
